How a divorce works
In England and Wales most divorces take around seven months from application to final order. Here is what happens in that time.
Week 0
Application
One of you, or both together, applies online. No reason or blame is needed.
Weeks 1 to 20
Time to reflect
The law builds in twenty weeks to think. It's when most couples sort out their finances.
Week 20
Conditional order
You confirm you want to go ahead and the court grants the conditional order.
Six weeks and a day later
Final order
You can apply for the final order and the marriage is legally ended. We usually wait until the finances are approved.
